About Nisan

Nisan Ilkmen graduated from the Master of Arts in Couple and Family Therapy program at Adler University in 2017 and is currently pursuing her PhD in Couple and Family Therapy.
Nisan grew up in Turkey, has lived in Canada, and now resides in the U.S. She believes her immigration experience and multi-cultural background increase her sensitivity to diversity and the associated struggles.
Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, Nisan provides a safe and supportive environment for her clients to process their thoughts and feelings. Her style is gentle and reflective, providing clients an in-depth understanding of their emotions and attachment needs. She works collaboratively with her clients to develop a sense of self awareness, self compassion and make deep, lasting connections in their relationships
In working with individuals, she also utilizes EFT to resolve anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. She has experience working with issues of substance abuse in outpatient therapy and treatment settings.
Nisan believes that change is achieved through exploration of the origins of difficulties, gaining insight and adapting new patterns of relating to oneself and others. Nisan is passionate about working with diverse groups of clients and understands that racial, religious and sexual identities interact with one’s beliefs and emotions. She integrates systemic principles into her treatment and prioritizes addressing family of origin dynamics along with childhood and adolescence experiences in her therapeutic relationships.
Nisan practices in English, Turkish and French.
